Small Actions, Big Waves: Exploring Pathways to Sustainable Coasts in the South Pacific using the Leverage Points Framework

Willem Malherbe is currently a postdoctoral fellow affiliated with both IRD (French Research Institute for Sustainable Development) and CIRAD (French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development). His research explores pathways towards sustainability for coastal communities in Fiji and New Caledonia, using the Leverage Points Framework as a tool for systemic analysis. During his short stay at the ERC EqualSea Laboratory, he will give a seminar at CRETUS on Thursday 21st at 1:00 PM, entitled: “Small Actions, Big Waves: Exploring Pathways to Sustainable Coasts in the South Pacific using the Leverage Points Framework.”
Willem Malherbe is a postdoctoral researcher based at the IRD and CIRAD in Montpellier, France. His current project uses the Leverage Points Framework as a system diagnostic tool for determining pathways toward sustainability for coastal communities in Fiji and New Caledonia. He completed his PhD at Stellenbosch University (South Africa), where he used a social‑ecological systems approach to operationalise resilience and apply it to food systems and their production landscapes in South Africa. He is also co‑chair of the Navigating Ethical Place‑Based Research Working Group within the Society for Social‑Ecological Systems.
