Bio

Graduate in Chemistry, specialty in Industrial Chemistry (1966-71) Graduated (1973) and Doctor in Industrial Chemistry (1981) from the University of Santiago de Compostela. Since 1983 University Professor until today in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Santiago de Compostela and Principal Investigator in the Environmental Engineering and Bioprocesses group at USC. Secretary of the Department of Chemical Engineering (1992-2001 and 2002),

• Coordinator of Masters: 1) “Techniques in water treatment” of the University of Santiago de Compostela (1989-1991). 2) Water module in the Master “Environmental Science, Technology and Management” of the University of Santiago de Compostela (1992-2001), 3) Coordinator of the Official Master of the Department of Chemical Engineering: “Engineering of Chemical and Environmental Processes courses 2009-10 to 2012-13
• Coordinator of the Doctoral Program of the Department of Chemical Engineering: “Chemical and Environmental Engineering” (2149-01-1) without interruption from the 1999-2000 academic year to the present. The program has maintained the MEC Quality Mention from the 2003-2004 academic year to 2009-10 and the Excellence Mention from 2010-11 to the present
• Coordinator of the European project “Biotobio” (Ref: FMRX-CT97-0114) for mobility of young researchers (1997-2001). Coordinator of Researcher Exchange Programs (European ALPHA Programs (Network
INGAM, 4 projects), Erasmus, Socrates).

His main lines of research are: Anaerobic wastewater treatment, Autotrophic denitrification (Anammox Process), Hybrid membrane bioreactors, Aerobic granular reactors. Aerobic granulation, clean technologies and production of bioplastics (PHA) from wastewater. The objective of his research lines has been focused on the advancement of knowledge in the treatment of residual waters oriented to the solution of environmental problems together with the formative work.

He has participated in a total of 48 projects in competitive calls: 6 European research projects (3 as IP), 21 R&D projects of the National Research Plans (13 as IP), 11 R&D projects financed by the Xunta de Galicia (6 as IP) and 7 networks and actions integrated with various countries (Germany, Portugal, Israel, Chile, Mexico, Italy, India, Austria), two of them as coordinator. Around 60 research contracts with companies.

Lines of investigation
• Advanced technologies for wastewater treatment
– Autotrophic dentrification (anammox process): Application of the anammox process for the treatment of anaerobic digester effluents treating sludge or industrial waste.
– Granular aerobic reactors: Application of aerobic granular biomass for the removal of organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus from industrial wastewater (fish canneries, pig slurry, dairy products, etc.).

Current projects
