Associate professor of Economics and Director of the EqualSea Lab at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), an ERC project funded by the European Research Council Consolidator Grant; Oportunius Distinguished Research Fellow of the Xunta de Galicia; and Karl-Göran Mäler Scholar at the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics. He conducts interdisciplinary scientific work on the role of values, institutions, and knowledge in catalyzing transformative changes for the oceans and people’s diets, with more than 200 scientific publications in leading journals such as Nature, Nature Sustainability, and Science. He has been awarded as Highly Cited Researcher in 2021, 2022, and 2024. He has received over €9 million in competitive grants and has been distinguished with the Best Doctoral Thesis Award, the Yamamoto Prize, the 1st INESMA Prize, the 2022 IPBES Gulbenkian Humanity Prize, and the Blue Planet Prize for IPBES 2024.
He is currently Lead Coordinator of the IPBES Global Assessment of Transformative Change, Co-Chair of the PECS Programme on Ocean Equity for Sustainable Futures, and co-author of the Global Tipping Points Report. He has been invited as speaker at international organizations such as the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European Court of Auditors, and the Convention on Biological Diversity. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Marine Policy and a member of the editorial boards of prestigious journals such as Ambio, Ecosystems and People, Marine Policy, People and Nature, and Nature Ocean Sustainability. His research has been cited by Le Monde, The Economist, CNN, and The Washington Post, among others.
